DIVERSION DEPOSITS, GRANTS
GIVING A BOOST TO C&D DIVERSION
Nora Goldstein
Waste characterization studies show a fairly high percentage of potentially recyclable construction and demolition materials going into the landfill. An innovative program in California taps into public sector incentives and private sector investments. Part II
  31 EXPANDING WOOD WASTE MARKETS
CREATING A NICHE FOR URBAN WOOD RESIDUALS
Stephen M. Bratkovich
A U.S. Forest Service staff member reports how millions of cubic yards of woody residuals in America’s cities are processed into value-added products while eliminating disposal costs.

34
MULTIPLE SERVICES, PRODUCTS
EXCAVATOR SPAWNS SUCCESSFUL WOOD RECYCLING BUSINESS
Ron Sheets
Contractor moves fluidly from excavation to organics recycling, with services ranging from land clearing and contract grinding to soil remediation and wood products marketing.

    ANAEROBIC DIGESTION ADVANCES
36
RENEWABLE POWER CONNECTIONS
ELECTRIC UTILITIES HOOK UP TO BIOGAS
Jerome Goldstein
Pennsylvania Power & Light, Alliant Energy, Wisconsin Electric and Portland General Electric are some utilities that are plugging into anaerobic digestion projects.

TOTAL TREATMENT PACKAGE
TEMPERATURE PHASED ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF DAIRY MANURE
John F. Katers
Wisconsin farm installs a two phase thermophilic/mesophilic digester and is pilot testing solids separation and water clarification technologies that will result in a more closed loop manure management system.

RESEARCH REPORT
CONTROLLING ODORS USING HIGH CARBON WOOD ASH
Paul Rosenfeld, Mark Grey and Mel Suffet
A pilot study at a yard trimmings composting facility found that wood ash can be an effective odor management tool. High carbon wood ash, at 12.5 and 25 percent of the composting mix, reduced odor detection (D/T) for a variety of odorous compounds.

46
WINNING THE “DIVERSION GOLD”
MATERIALS RECOVERY DURING THE WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
John C. Madole and Carolyn LaFleur
Obstacles are overcome to meet, and possibly beat, a landfill diversion goal of 85 percent. Sorting and composting of the 1,196 tons of mixed trash collected are key to the landfill diversion.

47
AFFORDABLE AND SUSTAINABLE
DYNAMIC PARTNERSHIP YIELDS HIGH QUALITY COMPOST
Britt Faucette
A juice company, brewery, organic farm, university staff members and community residents are working together to create a successful composting demonstration site.

49
ON-SITE MANAGEMENT
FOOD BANK PROGRAM ADDS A COMPOSTING COMPONENT
Karin Grobe
Santa Cruz food diversion project provides excellent data on operating an on site, in-vessel composting system to avoid such problems as odors and leachate, while ending up with a quality product.

ON THE ROAD TO BIOSOLIDS COMPOSTING IN TENNESSEE
Joel E. Alpert, John Evans and Monica Sowders
Project developers report results of nine different feedstock recipes plus an economic analysis of several composting scenarios. Part II

COMPOST USERS
LEAF COMPOST REDUCES FERTILIZER USE FOR CORN
Abigail A. Maynard
Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station trials show that inorganic fertilizer requirements were cut by at least one-half on compost-amended soils.

STANDARDS, PRODUCTS AND MARKETS
THE STATUS OF DEGRADABLE PLASTICS FOR COMPOSTING
Amy Satkofsky
BioCycle surveys resin producers, bag manufacturers, certifiers and composting facility managers to provide a roadmap of biodegradable and degradable plastics now available.

61
ASTM D6400-99 STANDARDS DEFINED
A standard set of tests established by ASTM measure the biological decomposition of plastic products with the intention of reducing confusion about what products are truly biodegradable.

65
COMPOSTING TRIAL IN KASSEL, GERMANY
The success of biodegradable plastic packaging is being put to the test in this city of 200,000 people. The pilot project examines the impact of biopolymers on consumer habits and compost quality.
