PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Monday, April 12, 2010 — 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Workshop Option 2 (all day):
Composting “Crash Course”

This 8-hour workshop is designed for newcomers to the composting world — communities or institutions — who want to start a composting operation, as well as those who are underway and want to move to the next level of organic waste stream management, e.g., add food waste to a yard trimmings composting operation.

The Crash Course will start with a review of composting principles and the basic science, then discuss composting methods as they relate to feedstock combinations, climate and equipment/scale of operations. In the afternoon, the workshop focuses on organics collection options for residences and businesses, financing and project economics, and compost marketing and end uses. This interactive course will include presentations and advice from experts in the field and open discussion with other participants in order to facilitate information transfer. The Composting Crash Course includes a tool-kit with how-to articles from BioCycle, sample documents and spreadsheets and a list of key resources.
